Beijing Introduction
Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China. It is also known in English as Peking. Beijing
is both an old and a new city--old in its cultural heritage and new as the capital of the country.

Beijing's history started some 500,000 years ago. It is here that the ancestors of modern Homo
sapiens, Peking men, lived in caves. Beijing has been an inhabited city for more than three thousand years.
The city has many places of historic interest and scenic beauty, including the Forbidden City, the largest and
best-preserved ancient architectural complex in the world, the Temple of Heaven, where Ming and Qing
emperors performed solemn rituals for bumper harvests, the Summer Palace, the emperors' magnificent
garden retreat, the Ming tombs, the stately and majestic mausoleums of 13 Ming Dynasty emperors; the
Ba-da-ling section of the Great Wall, and old Hutongs.

Beijing is also a modern city with 21st Century flavor. It will host the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Beijing tours

Forbidden City
The former Forbidden City, built between 1406 and 1420 in the center of Beijing, had been the
imperial palace of 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.

The Summer Palace
Located in the northwestern suburb of Beijing, the Summer Palace was a summer resort of China's
monarchs  during  the  Qing  Dynasty. It can be roughly divided into two parts-Longevity Hill and Kunming
Lake.

Beihai Park
Beihai Park has been a playground for emperors for hundreds of years. Some attribute this site to
Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan and founder of the Yuan Dynasty in China. Another attraction in
Beihai Park is the 9 Dragon Wall, sculpted in 7 colours of glazed tile.

The Great Wall
The world-renowned Great Wall, a symbol of the ancient Chinese civilization, has stood grandly on
the land of China for thousands of years. Stretching from the coast of the Bohai Gulf in the east and
terminating at Jiayu Pass in the west, it serpentines among lofty mountains for 12,700 li, or 6,350
kilometers, hence its Chinese name Wanli changcheng (Ten-thousand-li-long wall).
